Good questions
Frequently asked questions
A few things people ask us about our eggs. If your question isn't here, send us a note.
- Where does your feed come from, and is it organic?
Our grain feed is made fresh by a small, local feed maker who mixes it themselves. They know the exact fields the grain came from, how it was grown and what went on those fields.
It isn't certified organic, and that's a choice we made. We'd rather know those things firsthand than rely on a label.
Buying this way keeps the supply chain short and supports other local farmers. It also gives us real confidence in what our hens eat and in the eggs we sell you.
- What does soy-free and corn-free mean?
It describes what's in our hens' feed. Many chicken feeds use soy and corn as main ingredients. Ours is made from other grains instead, with no soy and no corn.
Some families look for eggs from hens fed this way, and it's how we've chosen to feed our flock.
- How should I store your eggs?
Keep them in the refrigerator, in their carton. The carton protects the eggs and keeps them from picking up other smells in the fridge.
Store them on a shelf instead of in the door, where the temperature changes each time it opens.
On our end, we follow Washington State's egg handler rules. Your eggs are handled and regulated the same way as eggs from much larger farms.
- Why does the yolk color change through the year?
Yolk color comes from natural pigments in what a hen eats. Our hens are on pasture, and what's growing out there changes with the seasons, so the yolks change a little too.
Color isn't how we judge an egg. We look at yolk strength and other signs of quality, so a deeper or lighter yolk is just a sign of the time of year.
- Where can I buy your eggs?
Look for Howe Family Farm eggs at Rosauers in Ridgefield.
- Why are your eggs sometimes sold out?
We're a small family farm with a small flock, so there are only so many eggs each week. When they're gone, they're gone until the hens lay more. Check back soon.
